Prior to Arrival
To accept the internship, you will need to complete the following (they will be e-mailed to you):
- UMBC Contingent I Agreement. This is required for UMBC-internal use.
- Participation Agreement. This gives the terms & conditions for
participation in the program.

- Waiver & Release Agreement. This explicitly limits UMBC's liability
under a range of circumstances.

You will also need to do the following before you can be paid
(the forms will also be e-mailed to you):
- complete an IRS W4 form.
- read and sign UMBC's Substance Abuse Policy
- complete a UMBC FICA Exemption Form
- complete a New Hire Fact Sheet
- provide a copy of your Driver's License and Social Secuirty Card
We will also be working with your mentor to obtain a access-badge for GSFC,
and appropriate work location, and a computer account. There will be
additional forms associated with these processes.
Getting to GSFC
Directions to
the Main Gate of the Goddard Space Flight Center. You MUST have valid
Photo-ID such as a Driver's License or Passport to obtain your badge.
Those of you staying on the UMCP Campus get get travel directions
by train or
SuperShuttle from BWI, or
from
National or Dulles airports.

During your Internship
- You will be paid (initially by check) every two weeks, starting June 12th
(& your last check will be issued after the internship has ended).
- You should fill out a Research Training Record on a daily basis, indicating what you did and how many hours you worked. This should be signed by your Mentor on a weekly basis, and turned in every 2 weeks.
- Generally we expect you to work 40hrs/week during normal business hours.
However, should it be appropriate, and with the agreement of your mentor,
there is some flexibility on this issue.
Please let us know immediately if you feel your Mentor's expectations
are unreasonable
- You should discuss your project, progress and plans with your Mentor on
at least a weekly basis.

- You are encouraged to take advantage of your time at GSFC by attending
appropriate group meetings, talks, social events etc.
There a
number of events specifically aimed at you, and
we encourage you to attend as many of these as you can. They will make your
internship experience much more rewarding.
