UMBC has PhD scientists working in a variety of research fields in support of the Astrophysics Science Division (ASD ) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. These scientists perform fundamental basic research (theoretical and/or observational), hardware and/or software design & development, instrument calibration, data archiving, associated documentation, along with various other roles in support of GSFC's mission. All are world-class scientists, and most also have time to maintain rigorous independent research careers.

At the current time, UMBC has scientists within ASD 's Astroparticle Physics Laboratory (Code 661), X-ray Astrophysics Laboratory (code 662), Gravitational Astrophysics Laboratory (code 663), and Observational Cosmology Laboratory (code 665).

GSFC Lab Main CESST Science Areas

ASD Astroparticle Physics Laboratory
(code 661) Support and use of the Swift spacecraft in the study of Gamma-Ray Bursts, Obscured Active Galactic Nuclei, and other hard X- & Gamma-ray emitting sources. Support and use of the INTEGRAL spacecraft. Development and testing of scientific software systems from the forthcoming launch of the GLAST spacecraft.
