Weather-Related Closings & Other Emergencies

Occasionally GSFC and/or UMBC will officially close for all or part of a day due inclement weather and other emergencies. Under less severe circumstances "liberal leave" etc policies may be announced.
  • Obviously each institution makes independent decisions as to if/when such situations are declared based upon a variety of local factors, however experience has shown that generally if one location closes, so too does the other...
  • The current status of UMBC will be announced on the UMBC Homepage, your my.UMBC Homepage, UMBC phone hotlines (1-410-455-8881, 8882, 8883, 8884, and 8885), and also via a variety of local media outlets in the Balto-DC regions. One can also sign-up for UMBC's Emergency Notification Service for cell phones, blackberries, iphones etc.
    • In all cases, no news means UMBC is open & operating normally
  • The current status of GSFC will be announced ... where? - information incomplete
    • In all cases, no news means GSFC is open & operating normally

The Primary Policy of CSST is that the decision as to when/whether it is safe to travel ultimately rests with each individual and should be made taking into account their personal circumstances. CSST urges you to ensure the safety of yourself and your loved-ones, and hence make an appropriate safety-first decision should inclement weather threaten/hit - you can probably make up any missed-time later that pay-period...

Below are guidelines for CRESST@UMBC personnel in a variety of circumstances.

  • All GSFC-based personnel
    Follow GSFC's Inclement Weather/Emergency notices
    • If GSFC is closed but UMBC is open, personnel should work from home and charge this as a regular duty day. If you are unable to work from home or alternate locations, contact the CSST Office at UMBC to find out how to complete your timesheet.
    • If UMBC is closed but GSFC is open, personnel should go to GSFC and perform regular duties.
    • If both UMBC and GSFC are closed, the campus will allow administrative leave. Scientists & other Exempt staff can either work from home and charge this as a work day, or charge it as administrative leave. (In terms of pay and accumulated leave, these two options are identical).
  • All UMBC-based personnel
Follow the on-campus UMBC Inclement Weather/Emergency notices
    • Administrative leave will be allowed when announced by the campus administration.
