Undergraduate Research Opportunities

The following opportunities are available for undergraduates interested in research in the broad fields of astronomy, astrophysics and space science (including hardware and software development):
For UMBC students:
  • PHYS499 "Senior Research" whereby the student, in consultation with a UMBC faculty member, formulates a senior research project and carries out this project under the direction of that faculty mentor. This is an un-paid position, worth up to 3 credits. At the current time enrollment in PHYS499 has PHYS321 & PHYS324 as prerequisites.
  • The CRESST Summer Internship Program which offers a 10 week paid internship to work at NASA's Goddard Spaceflight Center (in Greenbelt, MD) on a wide variety of research projects.
For non-UMBC students:
  • The CRESST Summer Internship Program which offers a 10 week paid internship to work at NASA's Goddard Spaceflight Center (in Greenbelt, MD) on a wide variety of research projects. Note: This is a great way to get a taste of what it might to be a Graduate student in Astronomy/Astrophysics and the expectations, and indeed to make contacts with potential PhD mentors!
Check out the breath of research underway within Astrophysical & Space Science Research underway by current UMBC Faculty and within NASA/GSFC's Astrophysics Science Division.
