Policies & Expectations for Graduate Students

Overview

The goal of the program is obviously to develop the skills & expertise of the student such that they can become both active & internationally-renowned within the research community in their chosen (sub)field of research, and effective teachers of the next generation. More specifically the overall goal is to demonstrate that the student has earnt (& deserves) the title Dr. and/or the letters Ph.D. after their name.

Upon graduation, the new-PhD is expected (& often required) to be able to teach "Astrophysics" at any level, and (at research-universities) is expected to be able to bring in sufficient research grants that they are able to cover their 3-month summer-salary plus one or more students and/or Post-Docs.

Below are the current Entry Requirements for the APPH/Astro program at UMBC, links to the Rules & Expectations Pre-PhD Candidacy (basically those of the APPH program at UMBC), links to the Rules & Expectations once a student becomes a PhD Candidate, (including some notes/links for students "writing-up"), and some notes/links useful for newly-awarded PhDs. However we start with why you might want to consider UMBC in the first place....
