NSPIRES Quick Reference Guide for JCAers

All PIs and co-Is on many NASA proposals need to be registered with the NSPIRES system. In order to be formally submitted via the NSPIRES system, you must click the "release to ORG" button once you have finished filling out that necessary proposal details. The proposal is then reviewed by UMBC OSP personnel, and 'submitted' (by OSP) if all the information is correct. In order to do this OSP will usually require additional information (most often a completed & signed UMBC Routing Form: see solicitation-specific sections for more information).
It is important that members of the JCA
have the correct information in their NSPIRES profiles

(such as their affiliation, addresses etc).
OSP may refuse to submit the proposal if crucial information is incorrect, missing or out-of-date.

What to enter for most of the NSPIRES entries is obvious. Below are a few FAQs for first-time JCAers, and for some of the less obvious changes etc that may have to be made:

Registration to NSPIRES

Use the "Registration Information" link on the the NSPIRES home page. The procedure is fairly straightforward and painless, however JCA members must remember to make their affiliation
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND BALTIMORE COUNTY
(note no comma). No other affiliation is allowed: Those JCA members working at GSFC should make "NASA/GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER" an "association" in the NSPIRES system.

Affiliations, Addresses etc for JCAers

JCA members must use
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND BALTIMORE COUNTY
as their affiliation (note no comma) irrespective of where they are physically located. No other affiliation or qualifiers are allowed. Only civil servants can use NASA/GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER as their affiliation. Those JCA members working at GSFC or elsewhere can make that other location an "association" in the NSPIRES system.

UMBC's OSP may refuse, or even not be able to sign-off on your proposal if you have an incorrect affiliation.

Changing an Erroneous Affiliation etc

Those of you with existing NSPIRES account, can change erroneous affiliation information as follows:
  • Log into NSPIRES.
  • Go to "Account Management"
  • Go to "Affiliations"
  • Hit "Add Affiliation" (bottom right)
  • Select to search by CAGE code (Right-hand pull-down), enter 1CDP0 into the left-hand field, and hit search.
  • This should bring up the UMBC info (with a "DBA" of UMBC/R41), which should then be selected.
You should also check that you have the correct & appropriate information in you NSPIRES "Address Book". Specifically,
  • If you use a UMBC address for Courier Shipping & Mailing, then make sure you specify the Physics Department in the appropriate fields, including in the "Suite/Apt.#/Mail Stop" field (so couriers etc know where to deliver).
Clearly you are free to use an appropriate work address elsewhere for these fields.
