Scientific Research Areas

DSS image of the Seyfert Galaxy NGC 1068, 40kpc on a side
My primary research interests centre on the study of the UV to Gamma-ray emission from Active Galctic Nuclei (AGN); a subset of galaxies whose central regions produce copious amounts of radiation, most likely due to the accretion of matter onto a "supermassive" black hole (106 to 109 times the mass of the sun). This work is primarily observational, involving the reduction & interpretation of satellite data, including those collected using EXOSAT, Ginga, IUE, ROSAT, HST, ASCA, RXTE, BeppoSAX, CXO, FUSE, and XMM-Newton missions (still operational).

My current research can be divided into three broad (but related) areas, as detailed below.
